The Printing Process

For my t-shirt I decided I was going to make my own stencil and use spray paint to copy my design onto the item of clothing. I decided i was going to make a dice print, so i took a picture of a dice and printed it off. I then took a scalpel and cut out all the shaded parts of the dice so I was left with the lighter parts of the dice. I then had a stencil. I took the stencil to the spray room and tested it with various different colour sprays on cardboard. Finally, I decided i was going to go with the colour silver. I sprayed over the stencil onto a white t-shirt at home in my garage and sprayed two dices on the front of the garment.

Other ways I could have printed on my garment is via print press. Print press is when you can print ink onto paper or a material. You can use a device which will apply pressure to the surface and evenly transfer the ink.

And another way I could have done this is through a heat transfer process. The process of the heat transfer printing begins with the printing of a design. The image is printed using a modified colour laser printer and the print medium used is transfer paper. The heat press is set to 180, press the tshirt underneath, heat transfer paper over the top then set for 30 seconds then lift it up and remove the transfer paper.

Lee Towndrow

Lee Towndrow is a visual artist based in New York City. His work has appeared in Time Magazine, The Paris Review, Das Magazin.
I am going to photograph in the same style as his work. Most of his photography is either in the studio, with very bright backgrounds created with coloured paper which he calls "paper portraits".
Or, he takes pictures in desolated areas such as car parks, streets and beaches.

To try and imitate Lee Towndrow's work I went to a park and took pictures of my friend Jodeci wearing a t-shirt with a print which I had made. Some of the pictures have bright green backgrounds from the leaves on the trees, similar to the bright colours that Lee uses on his portraits. Also, I took pictures of my friend sat on a desolated area of gravestones, similar to the photographs that Lee takes of people in other desolated areas such as carparks and skateparks.

For my photography assignment I chose 'bon app├ętit' magazine. I chose this magazine as they usually feature cakes and puddings on the front cover. Their covers are always bright and very close up.
The front cover is usually mainly centered on the picture as their is never normally much text.

I have also had to create my own layout for the article;

This is the layout I am going to use, the boxes show were my images will be placed.

Last week I took my photographs for the magazine at a bakery in Birmingham. I took the photos in the shop as they looked nice and there was enough lighting so I didn't need to create any extra. These are my photos

I made sure the camera was correctly focused and the photos were taken up close. The different colours look really good as they are bright and eye catching.

For my photography project I have to take photos for an article fit for a magazine of my choice. I have decided I am going to take photos for a food magazine. I am undecided as to which magazine I am going to choose, therefore I have looked at various food magazines to do my research.

                                                     delicious. magazine

The covers of delicious. magazine are all extremely bright and colourful. The food always looks appetising (obviously) and there is also quite a big deal of text. The main colour of these front covers is pink,

Baked & Delicious

This magazine is very similar to the 'delicious.' magazine as both are very brightly coloured and extremely close up to the food that is being photographed. The magazines are both very womanly as they use mainly 'girly' colours such as pink and baby blue which tells me the target audience is women rather than men.

Holiday Baking

The front covers of 'Holiday Baking' magazine are different yet still similar to the other baking magazines. This magazine still has a very close up, focused picture on the front cover. However, the colour scheme is very different as it is darker and mainly red. This could mean the targe audience is different and may be marketed for men aswel as women.

From my research I can conclude that my pictures for the magazine I choose must be close up and accurately focused. I am going to make sure the pictures I take are bright and have a high amount of lighting.

As part of one of our projects for Photography, we are looking at various magazine covers. Our brief is to create our own cover of i-D magazine and look at a variety of different mags.

Vogue

Vogue was founded in 1892 by Arthur Turnure and is published monthly. The magazine at this time was primarily concerned with fashion. The masthead for Vogue is always big and bold and is the first thing you notice.  The featured cover star on Vogue is normally a celebrity or well known model and are usually looking directly at the camera. As it is a fashion magazine there is always some focus on what the cover star is wearing, therefore the cover is never just a close up face.

NME

NME (New Musical Express), created by Theodore Ingham, is a UK pop/rock music journalism publication published weekly since 1952. There's always male or female musicians on the front cover and largely focuses on todays music, meaning the cover stars are always current. The main image on the front cover is usually a very famous singer or new comer. Especially artists that have recently been in the press. The short, bold masthead is kept the same on every issue in the top left corner.
